‘Hijama’ is derived from the word ‘hajm’ which means ‘sucking’. It is a restorative process of ridding the body of unclean blood. Hijama, also known as the cups of cure (cupping therapy), is a medical procedure that has been used for centuries to enhance ones’ health. Hijama therapy is the procedure of placing cups at different points on the body to create a vacuum and once the muscles have been pulled drawing the blood to the cupped area, small incisions are made to the area and cupped again, sucking out all the impure blood.
Unfortunately, a forgotten sunnah, the hijama therapy was highly recommended by our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In the contemporary world, we are facing an outrage of worse than ever diseases that are often left uncured by modern science and medicine. The cupping therapy procedures need to be revived in order to best combat diseases in the most harmless of ways. Along with the best way of life depicted, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) declared Hijama as the best of medicine. He ﷺ said: “Hijama cupping is the most helpful procedure for human beings to cure themselves.” (Al Bukhari # 5357). The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has also been reported to have said, “Indeed the best of remedies you have is hijama, and if there was something excellent to be used as a remedy then it is hijama.”
The cupping therapy works wonders on the people who opt for it. It sucks out the undesirable blood from the body, leaving the body rejuvenated and refreshed. It can be used to target and treat conditions including digestive problems, joint and muscle pain, asthma, low fertility and many more. This therapy ensures long term benefits and long lasting effects unlike the modern medicine and surgery. There are specified spots on the body that are cupped during the hijama process, in order to collect the unwanted blood. However, it is most often performed on the back, neck or shoulders, delivering exceptional results.
Hijama can also be used for boosting the circulatory and immune systems, as often done by athletes. It cleanses and detoxifies the body. The most common illness that cupping is used for is that of muscle or joint pain, relieving the patient, leaving them feeling healthier and more efficient. Cupping also helps in fertility and hormonal balance of the human body. Hijama is also useful for treating many muscular, skeletal, neurological, immune, cardio-vascular, respiratory, digestive and urinary issues.
Research and study have also been recorded to state that Hijama therapy has a positive impact on ones’ mental health. It ensures to reduce blood pressure and leaves the individual calm and stress-free. Not only that, the cupping procedure can also be used to cure more severe and disturbing problems like depression and anxiety. Before giving in to anti-depressants and relaxants that may have harmful side effects, it is highly recommended to give hijama a chance. Hijama patients have often mentioned that besides the illness that was being treated, they also felt mentally healthier and relaxed.
Beauty has become the most desired asset to all in the 21st century. It is a known fact that clean and healthy blood leads to a youthful, glowing skin. Hijama therapy is the process of cleansing the blood itself, ultimately effecting the outlook of the patient. Good skin, besides being a bonus that comes with the hijama therapy, can itself be treated with cupping. It cannot solve all beauty aspects, but acne, excessive flushing or redness and painful or itchy rashes are some problems that can be cured using this forgotten treatment.
Alongside the benefits reaped by the skin due to wet cupping, makeup artists around the world have now introduced dry cupping as the most effective procedure for a tight and youthful skin. This process is carried out by cups that come in various sizes, catering to all the dimensions of the face. These cups are placed at one point on the face for few seconds and then slowly pulled upwards across the face, leaving the muscles tightened and the skin smoother.
