Sciatica Pain

The term sciatica refers to the different signs and symptoms of a leg pain. One can have tingling feeling, lack of sensation, and weakness resulting in difficulty in movement in the specific part of the leg. Sciatica pain elevates from the lower back and moves all the way through the buttocks, and then does down the large sciatic nerve in the back of both legs. Sciatica pain can expand and go down to the foot and toe. This lower back pain results due to a number of tribulations. These may include lumber herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or degenerative disc disease.

Here are some sciatica treatments that can give relief from sciatica.

Massage The Affected Area to Relieve Sciatica Pain:

The very first idea that comes to the mind when we talk about any home remedy is the massage. Different oils are found helpful in treating different pains. But, if we specifically treat sciatica, St. John’s wort oil has proven helpful in relieving sciatica pain. You can massage it on the affected area twice or thrice a day. There are some pressure points. If you concentrate and massage on these pressure points, you can feel relief in your lower back pain. Sesame oil is also found effective in treating sciatica. All you have to do is to mix three tablespoons of nutmeg powder in one cup of sesame oil. Heat it and let it cool. It should be neither very cold nor very hot. Apply it on the affected area, massage few times a day, and feel the difference in your lower back pain.

Use Hot and Cold Compression for Sciatica Treatment:

Hot and cold packs are used in sciatica treatment. You can place these packs for about fifteen to twenty minutes on the affected area. Try to avoid cold packs if you have circulatory issues. Make sure you use moist heat for hot compression. It may take few hours to take relief from lower back pain.

Apply Turmeric for Sciatica Treatment:

Turmeric is said to have anti-inflammatory properties. It is a helpful home treatment for sciatica.  You can make a health giving drink by mixing one teaspoon of turmeric to one cup of milk. You can drink it two times a day. Turmeric supplements are also available, but one must consult the doctor before taking any supplement. Anyone who is suffering from diabetes and gallstone should avoid the use of turmeric.

Regular Exercise for Lower Back Pain:

Exercise on daily basis can reduce the pain resulting from sciatica. Knee to chest stretch is specially meant for this purpose. It will soothe the lower back pain.

  • Place a mat and lie on your back.
  • Your feet should be straight and your hip-width apart.
  • Take a deep breath and bend your right knee in the upward direction.
  • Now make a clasp of your hand and try to pull your leg toward the chest. Make sure you do not put any excess strain on it.
  • While doing this you have to keep your left leg flat on the mat.
  • Try to maintain this pose for twenty seconds and then lower your leg.
  • Now do it with your other leg as well.
  • Repeat the movements for three to five times.
  • Try doing it with both legs together as well.

It is generally recommended not to do stretching and the activities that place additional strain on the back. It is also recommended to place pillow between the knees while lying on one side to increase comfort. Some doctors suggest lying on your back with a pillow under knees.
